Re:     Joint Leadership Initiative

Date:  1/19/10

Last year as I served as president of the MSSAA, I set several goals that I hoped to accomplish during my tenure in that position.  One of those goals targeted building a stronger relationship between the Massachusetts Secondary School Administrators’ Association and the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents.

At our initial meeting, representatives from both organizations agreed that a collaborative approach to school leadership was an important topic to pursue.  Knowing that it would be beneficial to our effort, we invited the Massachusetts Elementary School Principals’ Association to join us at the table for further discussions on this topic.  As a result, representatives of MASS, MSSAA and MESPA crafted the attached statement which has been unanimously accepted by each of the three Boards of Directors.

Now that we have a unified statement on Collaborative Leadership, the three organizations would like to promote this notion through joint professional development offerings.  Our vision at this time is to develop and offer workshops to District Leadership Teams in order to build or strengthen their individual organizational culture.  We are considering a late summer workshop to kick off this initiative in which leadership teams would come to participate in panel discussions and break out sessions, and to explore different models and protocols that are being used by successful teams.

Your feedback to this initiative is imperative to our success.  I would ask that you read the attached statement and then reply to me in writing as to how we could best proceed in order to offer assistance to your District’s Leadership Initiatives.  Please identify concerns that you would like addressed, and the best format in which to provide professional development.  Also, if you know of Leadership Teams or models that are effective, we would appreciate knowing about them as well.

As is mentioned in the Leadership Statement (Click Here to view), it is the hope of MASS, MSSAA and MESPA to promote the implementation of collaborative leadership in our schools and districts so that we may continue our quest for excellence.

Thank you in advance for your help with this initiative.
